Thanks to the freesat team who are exhibiting at the Stuff Live exhibition in London, PVR Junction were treated to a hands on look at the new FOXSAT-HDR in action.
Just before the doors opened at the Excel Exhibition Centre we were invited to talk to both freesat and Humax together about the brand new satellite service, which includes free high definition TV from the likes of BBC and ITV, called freesat. And, just for you, the team offered to give our readers a walk through of the freesat service when used together with the nw Humax FOXSAT-HDR PVR.
So, with freesat ready and PVR Junction cameras running, without further ado sit back and enjoy their introduction to freesat+ …

Hmmm, lovely interface which we are all familiar with already with the Humax foxsat, but what about the SD channels? I would have loved to have seen the quality of the SD channels via the HDMI connection, and the live wasn’t shown at all. Attractive as the UI is on Humax products, we don’t watch the Menu’s do we?
Thank you thank you thank you PVRjunction. This will be my first PVR and I can;t wait to get my hands on one! Can you confirm fast forwarding through adverts?
I was at the show yesterday. Standard definition not great, same as Sky. High definition was impressive. The autopadding feature looks genuinely useful. You have options to add 1-5 minutes to recording starts/ends.
headgear you can fast forward adverts up to 64x. At the show we saw the skip button which can jump past 4 minutes of adverts in one go! Quick as a flash. The button next to it makes it jump backwards. If I remember rightly the jump buttons were user configurable. Something like (10 seconds/15/30/60/120/240). We can get the options available for both backwards and forwards skip buttons confirmed.
portis we were told by Humax during the summer that the autopadding system would not be user configurable i.e. with the feature switched on it will add a set 3 minutes to both ends of all recordings. Glad to learn the software at the show has user preferences for padding. I noticed the find feature in the EPG wasnt working yesterday. It showed the software wasnt finished yet.
Can the freesatfromsky card be used in this to get the free channel 4 HD channel? If so I’m buying it today
The Foxsat PVR has a CAM slot and a non-freesat mode. So a dragon cam should do it
Well done PVR junction for having come up with exclusive clips immediately on line. I too went along to the Exhibition and found Freesat/Humax stand with some very exciting stuff.
Did anyone notice the wording of one of the dialogs in the demo: “Select the one what you want”?
I hope someone with a better command of grammar goes through these before release.
Also a great shame that the USB port won’t handle Xvid files. I recognise the licensing considerations, but even so – what a missed opportunity.
Well done for all the info so far! A question for you guys please … Does the box upscale SD To HD via the HDMI cable like you can do on several Freeview PVR’s? Can you also record on to an external DVD recorder to save TV shows?
Brian these types of receivers will upscale the SD picture. Unless you had a cheaply made TV, normally the TV will do the best job of upscalling for itself. But essentially you have the choice so its a case of which one you perceive has the edge.
Will you be able to copy recordings from the pvr to a dvd recorder? Will there be restrictions on what can or can’t be recorded?
Adrian, connecting a DVD Recorder to the VCR scart won’t be a problem for archiving.
have read the reviews correctly? Can the unit also be configured to receive freeveiw channels broardcast on satailite?
Do you need to have two lnb inputs coming into the same room to be able to record one channel and watch another, any help on how this will work would be really helpful
Thanks

Hi Davek
Yes you need two lnb inputs into the box
There are 2 LNB inputs but I’m sure you only need one feed from the dish!
The second LNB input is fed from the LNB1 output adjacent to LNB1 in and LNB2 in.
Will the PVR be available to buy this side of Christmas? Last month Freesat said from November
If forums are to be believed Humax Commercial Director Graham North sent out a newsletter at the same time which says available from late November
It needs to be in the shops early December for Christmas TV!
Do you need to cables from your dish for this PVR
Do you need two cables coming from your Sat dish to work this PVR, like Sky HD?
Q)” Do you need two cables coming from your Sat dish to work this PVR, like Sky HD?”
A) Yes and No, A single cable can be switched between vertical and horizontal polarization, If the two channels required have different polarizations you need both cables, If the two channels required are of the same polarity a single cable can be looped to both inputs of the HDR to receive both channels from one cable
does the box include a loopthrough cable to go from lnb1 out to lnb2 in? graham north said it needed 2 feeds, but i assume thats a polarity thing. where can you obtain loopthroughs if not provided?
No, The user manual does not show a loopthrough cable as being ‘in the box’, But it would fairly easy to make
Might be worth noting that you cannot presently update the software with one lnb , called humax they have no solution at present, a wee bit of an oversight there, it would be nice to ugrade the software without having to pay out good money for another lnb ;( maybe via the usb or ethernet connection)
Looks the part, but where on earth can we buy them?
AS Dave Stelmach said, it looks great but where do we get one? Comet now don’t even list it anymore, nobody else seems to have them in stock……….ever.
I have just had my Humax Foxsat PVR delivered and as a user for 2 1/2 years of the old freeview PVR I’m disappointed with the EPG, is not very clear and I have trouble seeing the channel names it all seems a bit faded not clear as the old 9201T.
Also the I can’t bring up Favourites EPG with one button press, (as before), you have to go through a series of button presses to get favourites on the EPG.
Deleting a file used to be simple not anymore press this button, press that button, press, press, press…
Picked up my Humax Foxsat Freesat+ PVR today from Argos in Brum for £240
Having been a SKY+/HD customer for the past 4/5 years I decided to make the switch over to Freesat+ and I must say Im VERY impressed. Very user friendly with added features that leaves the SKY+/HD system lagging behind in 2nd place.
This is one serious bit of kit that excedes all my expectations.
Dont delay, Get one today.
having a few problems, cannot erase recordings, have been trying everything without any joy. can you help, thanks!
I’m struggling to copy recorded programmes from the Foxsat Freesat+ PVR to my DVD recorder – any advice?
“Picked up my Humax Foxsat Freesat+ PVR today from Argos in Brum for £240″ How did you get it at this price? The Current Argos Price for the Foxsat HDR is £293.59 and £146.79 for the Foxsat HD
Mike you can’t delete anything while recording, you do have to press a lot of buttons to get to the delete. ie Media – opt+ – find program to delete press Red Button
can you connect a freeview box up to it so you can record channels on the freeview box. or can you somehow receive freeview channels like dave and stuff using the satellite dish or an aerial.
Is the ethernet port enabled as standard? If yes, would my home network be able to see it as a connected device, and could I therefore use it to store other media?
